In a recent blog post by John C. Maxwell, author of the book Good Leaders Ask Great Questions, he answers this: How Do I Change My Mindset from that of a Producer to that of a Leader?
Maxwell draws a comparison of the types of questions asked by leaders versus what the producers ask. This is the comparison point I would like to present to you:
The Producer produces through addition
The Leader produces by multiplication
In my mind, the answer is clear: The Producer seeks results driven by efficiency and effectiveness. The Leader, on the other hand, seeks results driven by team efforts that are both efficient and effective. In my opinion, a leader is also a Producer that leads by example because we cannot expect others to do what we are not willing to do ourselves. If you are a Leader in an organization you are usually managing people not just processes. You don’t have to know it all, you just have to know your talent pool so you can delegate and empower.
Therefore, you must change your approach from leading by example to empowering others to do the same. How do you do this? You can start by transferring knowledge, granting authority, mentoring and allocating the resources needed to succeed. Without a doubt, as a leader you must be able to communicate your vision and inspire others. But empowering others allows you to multiply the results.
I encourage you to read the article and chart at John C. Maxwell’s site here
